There were many people involved in the Crusades for over more than 200 years. In the beginning Jerusalem was wanted by three groups. The Christians wanted Jerusalem because it was where Jesus was crucified and ascended into heaven. The Muslims wanted Jerusalem because they said it was the place where Muhammad met Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The Jewish people wanted the Jerusalem because it was the place where Solomon built the ancient temple. When the Muslims had control of Jerusalem the Christians wanted it back. Pope Urban II called for a Crusade against the Muslim Turks and the first Crusade had begun. One interesting person associated with the first Crusade was Peter the Hermit. Peter the Hermit was a monk and he preached and recruited people to fight in the First Crusade. He was a leader who helped win the first Crusade.
