Who went on the Crusades?

When the Crusades were called many people answered that call. These included Christian Parishioners, Feudal Lords, Knights, Peasants, Serfs, Monks, Criminals, Debtors, Children, Noblemen, Young men, and The Younger Sons. Not all people who joined the Crusades were fighting for religion. Many were fighting for freedom, land, riches and the thrill of adventure. The peasants because they wanted a chance to get new land. The Serfs didn't like being poor and on the bottom of the feudal system and they were hoping to change their status. If criminals agreed to fight they were able to get out of punishment. Young men found the Crusades as a way to get riches and adventure and prove themselves. In the Middle Ages the only child who gained from their family was the first born boy. The younger sons were not given anything so they went on the Crusades to gain riches. The children went because they thought they were the ones pure enough to claim the Holy land.
